This past weekend we had several occasions where we had lots of lightning and thunder and yet not a drop of rain at our house. Some places in Houston did get rain but it was just wherever the storm popped up. On Sunday afternoon, my husband went out in the backyard to plant some seeds for fall in our pitiful garden. All of a sudden a little bit of lightning popped up….of course I am the only alarmist in the family who would worry about such a thing! In a few more minutes there was a very LOUD crack of lightning and I ran to the back door to make sure my husband wasn't sprawled out in the backyard. He was fine but hurrying to get inside. That lightning was way too close for comfort even for him! But it wasn't until later that evening that we discovered that lightning bolt must have hit the chimney on the house a few doors down on the corner! Look at these photos I took this morning of their chimney and roof!

Get Your Stamping School Supplies Tax Free in Texas…this weekend only!
Tax Free Holiday in Texas this weekend! Aug. 21-23! That's Friday, Sat. and Sunday! I think school supplies are new on the list this year as tax free items in Texas so get what you need! Think ahead to all of those school projects you will encounter, usually at 10:00 pm the night before they are due! Wouldn't it be great to have supplies on hand to make life easier? I know it has worked for my kids! I always had a shelf in my closet of a stash of school supplies so we never ran out of notebooks or adhesives or pens or whatever! Sometimes other moms would say they thought about calling me to see if I had extra of something their kids needed because they knew I had a stash!
And if not school projects, think about Girl Scout and Cub Scout projects. My family always rolled their eyes at all of Mom's crafting, but as soon as they needed something for the Pinewood Derby car or whatever, it was always, "You wouldn't happen to have……..?" and I usually did!
From Stampin' Up! "The state of Texas is having a sales tax holiday from August 21 – 23. Because school supply items are included in this sales tax holiday, the below list of items will be tax free during the holiday period. What Happens in Houston When It Rains
Just a little attempt at stamping humor about a not-very-funny morning in Houston, TX! We had rain last night and more during the night which meant that by morning lots of streets were flooded, mostly on my side of town. Lots of schools are closed…..we don't have Snow Days here, we have Flood Days! We were fine at our house, but my husband had to wait an extra hour to go into work until we could see that the buses were getting through on the HOV lanes into downtown. Any low spots in Houston flood easily, and now we have some parts of highways or feeder roads built below ground level, which really doesn't seem very smart for an area that floods easily on rainy days. It's kind of a joke to see cars flooded in intersections or along streets, people who thought THEY could make it through when no one else could. But in reality they could be people new to Houston, or maybe couldn't see in the heavy rain, or in today's case, maybe it was still dark out when the weather was so bad. Of course there is nothing funny about being in this situation or having your car ruined.
But I thought for today's post, I would make a little card representative of the day in Houston…..where the cars are caught on the flooded streets and where you should really be in a boat!
I used some dotted paper (to represent the rain drops!) from the beautiful Parisian Breeze Specialty Paper, the "water" is Baja Breeze paper with the waves punched out with the Key Tag Punch (unevenly) and the "white caps" drawn in with the Signo Gel Pen (rather sloppy, but this floodwater isn't pretty). The boat is stamped and cut out from "Nursery Necessities". The cars are Sizzix die cuts (not sold yet by SU) cut with the Stampin' Up! Big Shot. The sentiment I just printed on the computer and punched with the large oval punch layered on the NEW Scallop Oval Punch (yes, you've gotta have it!) from the Occasions Mini.
The rain has stopped now and the sun is trying to come out, but the rain may come again this afternoon. Rush hour this evening could be a repeat of the morning commute!
Houston Azaleas to Stamp By
While I catch up with getting some other photos ready to post on my blog, I thought I would share some photos I took in my very own yard of our beautiful azaleas and some bluebonnets. This is a follow-up to the Azalea Trail and card of a couple weeks ago! I took these photos the other day before the rains came and I'm glad I did because the azalea blooms are about over now. Maybe these pretty flowers will inspire you to get out a nice flower stamp set and stamp something for spring!
I left out some photos, honest I did! This time of year and the azaleas and bluebonnets are a couple of the best things about living in Houston, so we have to enjoy the time while it is here.
Don't forget! Sale-A-Bration is coming to an end tomorrow! Tomorrow (March 31st) is the last day to get your free stamp sets, ribbon, or paper for every $50 in product you order. And Stampin' Up! has such great products, it won't be hard to make it to $50! And the stamp set "Botanical Blooms" in the SAB Mini would be a beautiful set to stamp some spring flowers like my azaleas! My Houston Azalea Trail Card
Last weekend was the annual Azalea Trail in Houston put on by the River Oaks Garden Club. This is one thing my husband and I have done every year that we have lived here except one! We love seeing the beautiful gardens and houses and basically seeing how the other half lives! We were excited that the four houses on the trail this year were new ones to us. There were other places on the trail as well, but we just did the four homes and gardens. One pool house was more beautiful than our house! Wow! And the azaleas were starting to bloom pretty nicely, even the ones in our own yard. Some years they have not been quite ready for the Azalea Trail. Just driving around the River Oaks area with its beautiful homes and yards was a treat in itself on such a pretty day.
So from the azaleas, I was inspired to make this card! Not sure that these flowers are azaleas, but they kind of look like them. This is the new Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set. I stamped, watercolored, and cut out the three "azaleas". On the background I stamped that same flower plus another one in the set and watercolored lightly to provide a background.
We have bluebonnets blooming in the backyard already so spring must be right around the corner!
If you need some stamps to make some spring flower cards, be sure to check out the online catalog at my website and click the Shop Now button! I used the Aquapainter and just refills and inkpads to color in the flowers. So easy!
Even Flat Stanley Is Excited!
Even Flat Stanley is excited about the new Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog!!
Flat Stanley from California came to Houston, Texas for a visit! He showed up just when the new Stampin' Up! catalog had come out. What a lucky guy! He was visiting my friend and her family and got to go around to lots of places. We were all surprised when he showed up at our little stamping group!
Here he is admiring some cards and ready to stamp!
We were so happy to have Flat Stanley visiting us!
Snowstorm Hits Houston, TX!
It is almost unbelievable enough that it would get cold enough in Houston to have to wear a jacket…..a winter jacket, that is….and button it up….but then late this afternoon it STARTED SNOWING!!!! When I went out to get the mail I thought could feel some microscopic moisture on my face. A little while later I went out and checked and could hear precipitation falling. The next time I went out, with my black jacket on, I could actually see some little flakes or maybe just sleet hitting my sleeve! You had to stare and squint to see it coming down…..but in Houston, this would be called a blizzard!! It does not snow in Houston, except maybe once every seven years or so! But it did snow here just two or three years ago on Christmas Eve. One weatherman had statistics to show that three dfferent years when there was a hurricane, we had snow in December. So maybe Hurricane Ike brought this as a peace offering a few months later!
The next time I went out the snow was starting to stick in the valleys on the roof!
When I went to pick up my husband, the snow was starting to stick on the cars. When we got home at 6 pm he put the trash out right away for some reason and after we were inside, I forgot about the snow. Wouldn't have thought it was still coming down anyway! But, when I looked out, it was still snowing and had accumulated even more!! This is so amazing!!
There! That should get even with those of you who have posted pictures of snow scenes from your windows, showing gorgeous trees covered in snow or a foot of snow on your deck or in your yard! These are blizzard pictures from Houston, TX!
And here are some Christmas lights and decorations while I am at it….
Those white specks are SNOW!
