Stampin’ Up! Making a Difference in Orlando…and the Cutest Truck Ever!!

During the Stampin' Up! Leadership Conference held recently in Orlando, Florida demonstrators spent time filling 2000 gift bags with Stampin' Up! supplies to be donated to Orlando teachers to use in their classrooms and as a thank you to teachers. Each bag is signed with a personal note. Watch this video to see the process, a peek at Stampin' Up! Leadership, and the CUTEST truck in the world delivering the gift bags!

Veterans Day November 11th

November 11 has become known as Veterans Day but originally it was Armistice Day, which was the end of World War I …Nov. 11, 1918. Perhaps a lot of our grandparents served in World War I. After the second World War and the Korean War, the Congress changed the word Armistice to Veterans to commemorate American veterans of all wars. That was June 1, 1954. In 1968, Veterans Day became one of the holidays celebrated to accomodate three-day weekends.  However, many did not agree with this and wanted Veterans Day to be celebrated on the exact date.  In  1978, after President Ford signed a new law in 1975, the holiday was returned to its original date of November 11th. If the day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then it is observed by the government on the Friday before or Monday after.

You can visit the Department of Veterans Affairs website here.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day.  Veterans Day is to thank living veterans for their service to all of us.

Thank you to all of our veterans!!

A Guest Visitor at the Stampin’ Up! Convention!

You heard a lot from me about the Stampin' Up! 2012 Convention this summer in Salt Lake City even though I did not attend this year. As a Stampin' Up! Demonstrator, I find going to the convention one of the most fun things I can do! For me, the biggest, biggest, biggest thing is all the creativity on display! So many displays and live demonstrations that you just think as soon as you get home you will make everything you saw at Convention! But there is also an overwhelming feeling of being with some of the nicest people you could ever meet, whether the Stampin' Up! employees or other demonstrators. I think we are all so happy to be there in the first place plus we just are a friendly bunch!

But what would the Stampin' Up! Convention look like to an "outsider"? This year Stampin' Up! invited a freelance writer, Connie Myers, and she shared her experience in an article on Scrapbook Update:

Demonstrators attended general sessions and classes throughout the three-day convention. General sessions included technique and product demonstrations, prizes, company announcements, achievement awards and on-stage recognition. Classes included several make- and-take sessions using new colors and products. New products were also displayed on Product Showcase boards. Dozens of display boards showcased class projects, general session techniques, and creative cards, scrapbook pages, and projects created by demonstrators. Demonstrators took photos to use as examples when planning their parties, workshops, and classes at home.

I know you will want to read her whole article and see the photos! I think she gave a complete report of what she observed at the Stampin' Up! Convention, plus, as I mentioned, experienced for herself the fun and friendliness available to everyone. You'll also learn a little history about Stampin' Up!

You can read the entire article here.

It might be unusual to encourage someone to read the Comments after the article, but I think in this case reading the comments will just add to your knowledge and excitement about the Stampin' Up! company and attending the Stampin' Up! Convention!

And if you would like to attend the Stampin' Up! Convention next summer for the 25th anniversary of Stampin' Up!, please get some information about joining the fun HERE.

St. Louis Cardinals World Series Parade!

What a fun time to get to go with family to see the parade downtown for the St. Louis Cardinals, the new World Series Champions!! We got to our spot by Union Station just as the parade was starting.  It was pretty hard to get good photos of the parade and players, but if you are a Cardinal fan, perhaps you will recognize some of them.  At least I got a good picture of the Rally Squirrel! The Clydesdales led the parade with manager Tony LaRussa riding on the wagon.  Don't think I got a picture of Lance Berkman but he rode by early on, a former Houston Astro. I even saved some of the red and white confetti for a souvenir!

Walking to the parade. You can see the crowds of Cardinal red along the curb up ahead.  That's the old Union Station on the right with the red roof and of course the St. Louis Arch up ahead.  You can just about see the Old Courthouse at the base of the arch by the flag.

You can barely see the Clydesdale horses pulling this wagon. Manager Tony LaRussa is the one in the red jacket with his back to the camera on the wagon.

Pi Day–March 14th

Today is “Pi Day“, and, if you are mathematically inclined, a day to celebrate!  I’m sure it’s something we all learned in school way back when, but I couldn’t really tell you much about it anymore!  Here is what the site www.piday.org has to say:

Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating.”

I wouldn’t be so interested, since as far as I know it has nothing to do with stamping, but when my son was in high school, in calculus (I guess) he was able to recite over 500 digits of pi and held the record for awhile for his class!  He has a “pi” t-shirt and everything.  So today he is home on spring break and sat down at some website and typed out 110 digits of pi. It’s called Pi Trainer, just in case you want to try it out yourself!  He typed the numbers out real fast, just hesitating for a moment, like it was nothing.  He said it’s muscle-memory!

“Disappearing St. Louis”…My Daughter’s Book about Old North St. Louis

My daughter Amy, always the writer, has just self-published her first book!  Actually, this is a book of photographs she has taken of  old neighborhoods in St. Louis, of buildings in disrepair from age and neglect.

This is what she has written about her book:

"My first book, Disappearing St. Louis,is finally complete!

Disappearing St. Louis presents 55 colored images, captured over a three-year period.  They depict the poor conditions of homes, churches, and commercial buildings across the city in historic neighborhoods such as Old North St. Louis, Vandeventer, Fountain Park, Academy, JeffVanderLou, and Hyde Park."

Amy has graciously donated the profits from the sale of Disappearing St. Louis to the non-profit organization Old North St. Louis Restoration Group which is successfully rebuilding a historic north side neighborhood one building at a time.

Amy and her book were mentioned in the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group blog on Friday.  Scroll down partway on this post to read about her book:

http://newoldnorth.blogspot.com/2008/11/christmas-shopping-season-begins-in-old.html

At the juried craft show that is mentioned, the 5th annual Rock 'n' Roll Craft Show,  Amy sold all 11 copies that she had cautiously published and sent to St. Louis to be displayed, not knowing what the response would be.

We're all SO proud of you, Amy!!!

Amy spent almost the first eighteen years of her life going to St. Louis at least twice a year to visit grandparents as her father and I both grew up in St. Louis.  Little did we know then that she would ultimately take such an interest in old buildings in St. Louis and combine that with her interest and talent in writing and photography.  Even while going to college in St. Louis, this interest took awhile to develop and since then she has enjoyed making trips back to St. Louis to visit friends and take photographs.  Who knew this would all evolve into publishing a book?!

If you want to read more about Amy, you can visit her website at www.amyfontinelle.com or visit her blog at www.twopenniesearned.blogspot.com.

My New Blog!

Just a few months ago, I had barely heard about blogs or knew much about them.  And now I have one!  Not long ago I started noticing that a lot of stamping ladies had their own blogs, but I sure didn’t know why.  Most that I looked at were very interesting, fun to read, and had wonderful stamping projects to view.  I didn’t dream that I would have one, especially so soon.  But here I am, partly as a challenge to myself to learn something new and try to keep up up technologically and partly to add another dimension to my stamping business.  So we’ll see how it goes!  Another good excuse to spend more time on stamping!
