Have you signed up for my Stamping With Karen Mailing List yet? If you like visiting my blog or if this is your first time here, please join us by signing up in the Mailing List Sign Up Box! You won’t get tons of emails from me!  But you will receive a main monthly email newsletter around the beginning of each month with the latest Stampin’ Up! news and any special offers, plus several tutorials for cards and other projects.  I also usually send out a mid-month email to update everyone on any new offers or to remind you of ongoing ones. Even though I try to keep it very short, I often include another project or two. So that is two emails a month. On some rare occasions, I may send out a special one if there is a big announcement or offer I want you to know about right away!

If you like getting new ideas for stamping, then this is for you! These projects are exclusive to my newsletter – you won’t find them anywhere else. As a special gift for signing up, you will receive a PDF called “A  Dozen Creative Gift Wrap Ideas”. And after that, you will get another email with a link to your FREE GIFT!

And one of the best parts of being on my mailing list is something that will be coming up soon! This may be hard to believe, but we are inching ever closer to Christmas, even as we are suffocating in the August heat!  Something very popular with my subscribers is my “12 Weeks of Christmas” newsletter. Each week leading up to Christmas, I send out a special email with an exclusive project in it.  We start with cards, move on to gift ideas, and end up with tags and bags! This makes it handy for my subscribers to get ideas or just be inspired to create something of their own. Get some cards made, make a few simple gifts, and then be ready with some wrap ideas and cute tags for gifts! It’s all fun! Only my subscribers receive these newsletters each week leading up to the holidays so make sure YOU are signed up! And tell your friends!

No obligation, of course!  As with any email, just unsubscribe it if it is not for you.

You can also “Be a Fan” on my Stamping With Karen Facebook page HERE and follow me on Instagram @stampingwithkaren.

Don’t Miss Out on My Newsletters!

For the Birds Mailbox

Are you on my Mailing List? If not, you missed out on getting all the news that we know so far about the Stampin’ Up! Retiring List, links to click to get your own list to print, info about My Digital Studio and why you might want it, the new Stampin’ Up! Weekly Deals, and more!

My monthly newsletter has all the latest Stampin’ Up! news and any deals, plus several projects with complete instructions and maybe some stamping or papercrafting tips and techniques. You won’t see these projects on my blog or Facebook page, they are just for my subscribers.

Occasionally I send out an extra newsletter, such as this last one about the Retirement List, but usually I only send one at the beginning of the month and one mid-month. I know people get lots of emails. But sometimes I want to be sure my subscribers have the latest important Stampin’ Up! information!

When you subscribe to my newsletter by filling in the red Sign Up box, you will also receive my free gift, “A Dozen Creative Gift Wrap Ideas”. You can use these ideas with whatever card stock, paper, ink and accessories are current and put your own twist on them if you like!

After you subscribe, you will receive an email asking you to CONFIRM your subscription.  You MUST open this email and click the link inside to officially be on my list. This is just “safe” email practice you’ve probably seen with other companies to guard against spam and other nasty stuff. So be SURE you watch for that confirmation email (usually within a few minutes) and after you click on that you will receive your FREE GIFT. Let me know if you don’t receive this confirmation email or have any trouble with the process.  It’s surprising how many people sign up but don’t complete the process and I can’t contact them and remind them to do so!

I’m Back! Happy Spring!

Death Valley National Park Spring WildflowersToday is the first day of spring! We came back from our trip to Death Valley, California yesterday and even here in Houston, where things are green year round, we could see the trees leafing out in that bright green and our azaleas are bursting into bloom! We were excited to see some spring wildflowers in Death Valley on our vacation there this past week. Lots of these little yellow flowers in certain areas, but when you get up close you see they are pretty spread out.

Death Valley National Park Wildflowers

We had never been to Death Valley before and although I resisted going with every fiber of my being, it turned out to be a spectacular place to visit (as long as I could go back to the car when I got too hot or tired from hiking with my husband and kids!!). I didn’t know what to expect (except lots of hiking!) but as all national parks have done, it delivered more than we could have imagined. I certainly wouldn’t want to be there if it was any hotter, but these temperatures were doable and comfortable enough in the mornings and evenings. The hotel we stayed at was very nice and convenient, the food not so great and very expensive, and we kept our water bottles and  the gas tank filled up so we wouldn’t have to worry.

At times we were BELOW sea level and at times 6000 ft above. The views and expanse were amazing, just amazing!!! The silence in many spots was golden. The mountains were rock, not covered by trees like you usually see, so the landscape was quite different. At times it looked like piles of dirt and rock like you see where mining has gone on or where construction is going on. But then you could see the beauty in all the different kinds of rock and their colors and the way they were laid down or uplifted. And it doesn’t hurt that I’m married to a man who knows all this stuff and which way water runs and how these mountains and landscapes were formed. We even visited a volcano that went off as recently as 300 years ago! The wind was so fierce I was afraid we would all blow in over the edge, but of course my family walked around the rim while I waited in the car! Some parts of the park looked like a moonscape. We also stopped to see some very tall sand dunes. There were people laying out in their swimsuits on the sand as if it were a beach – but there was no water anywhere around!

Death Valley

If you haven’t visited some of the national parks, you are really missing something. I find them to be almost a spiritual experience to see these amazing creations on our earth and to witness the forces of nature going on under our own feet or in front of our eyes, invisible but taking place over eons of time to form these magnificent landscapes that we can enjoy.

Even while I was away, I didn’t forget that Sale-A-Bration was going on! It only lasts until March 31 so don’t delay or you might forget and miss out on your free product with every $50 purchase!

Realize the Importance of What We Do In Our Personal Communications

At the Stampin’ Up! Leadership Conference this year, the keynote speaker was Jason F. Wright., an author and speaker. He spoke to the demonstrators about our Stampin’ Up! Statement of the Heart and how we make a difference with our handmade cards, handwritten letters and personal communication. This is something I feel very strongly about, that I worry our society is losing, because when I find a box of old letters, written in ink on paper, hand-addressed envelopes, I recognize and feel the person who wrote it. This is true with traditional scrapbooking, too.  When I hear someone say they don’t like to do the journaling because their handwriting is terrible, I think they are selfishly keeping something of themselves from the people ultimately looking at that scrapbook. Nothing typed or emailed can compare to the handwritten note or letter! I’m just as guilty, being in too much a rush to sit down and write a real letter. Think about how you used to feel when you went to the mailbox and found a letter from a friend. My mother wrote me letters almost everyday when I was away at college (everyone did think I got the most mail!).

Anyway, please take some time to sit down and watch and listen to this video of Jason Wright’s talk at Leadership. I guarantee you he is very funny and also very emotional describing some letters in his life.  Have a box of tissue handy! You’ll enjoy his stamping experiences also! And it will make you realize how important that paper and ink you are working with just might be to someone who receives your card or letter.

Hope you enjoy! Then go write a letter or send a card to someone! If you have a story about a special letter or card, please leave a comment. Here is the link to view the video if you need it:   https://youtu.be/iURdgEYuoso

“To love what we do and share what we love, as we help others enjoy creativity and worthwhile accomplishments…in this we make a difference!”

River Oaks Garden Club Azalea Trail

Azalea Trail FlowersIf you live in the Houston area and the rain doesn’t get too bad today, you should consider a trip to the River Oaks Garden Club Azalea Trail today. This is one thing my husband and I have done every single year (except one) that we have lived here and we always enjoy it. We like to focus on the houses, because you often get to walk through the main floor in order to get to the garden out back. Sometimes you only get to see the yard and garden. We love to see beautiful homes, and of course the Garden Club ladies have them all spiffed up and beautiful flower (or vegetable – or ???) arrangements in every room (but unfortunately you can’t take pictures inside the houses!). I often love the smallest details the most, like the table arrangements or decorations. It’s a chance to see how the other half lives, as they say! Some of us can only dream!

Azalea Trail Home & Garden

This is the BACK of a house. How would you like this to be your backyard?!

Azalea Trail Fountain

Just a little fountain for the back of the yard!

Azalea Trail Garden Party Table

An outdoor table set for a lovely party.

Azalea Trail Table Decorations

Cute table decorations!

Azalea Trail Tulip Tree

A Tulip tree in bloom!  Spring is coming!

Azalea Trail Yellow Tulips

This is how I would like MY flowers to look!

Azalea Trail Fountain

Always my husband’s dream feature! This type of fountain reminds him of one from his childhood.

Azalea Trail Pool

Unusual pool in a newer house and grass unlike the usual in Houston WAY back in the far corner of the large yard.

Azalea Trail Home Backyard

Our house and backyard! (Just kidding!) Those plantings on the left are azaleas. About three flowers had bloomed! But oh my, when all those and the ones along the back of the yard burst into bloom, what a beautiful sight that will be! Azaleas aren’t always blooming on the Azalea Trail!

Azalea Trail Easter Table Decorations

Another fun table for an outdoor party!

Azalea Trail Easter Table Place Settings

Yes, my friends are invited over for an Easter garden party in my beautiful yard behind my beautiful mansion!

Alyssum and Purple Flowers

This house wasn’t even on the Trail but was across the street and had these beautiful flowers blooming in front! So many pretty houses!

Azalea Trail Home Overlooking Golf Course

We like to have many parties in our numerous outdoor spaces at our home overlooking a country club golf course!! I really did like all the “spaces” and levels at this home, not that there are too many days in Houston that you can sit outside and enjoy such a thing.

Azalea Trail Pool Fountain

Just a relaxing fountain in the pool!

Azalea Trail Basket of Freesia

A cute basket of white freesia (we think).

Azalea Trail Azalea Bouquet

And finally, some azaleas on the Azalea Trail (if only in a bouquet!).

So if it is 11:00 pm, set your clock to 12:00 midnight. My mother always hated losing that hour and feeling tired the next day! I can’t believe Daylight Time has arrived already. Hello Dolly! at The Muny!

This isn’t your usual stamping post, but I’m sure you creative types could take some artistic inspiration from Hello, Dolly! if you would like! While in St. Louis to visit family last week, we made pretty much a last minute decision to go to the Muny, an outdoor theater in Forest Park, to see Hello, Dolly! The Muny Opera is a summer treat for everyone in St. Louis. When I was in high school, I would meet a friend at a mall close to my house and we would ride the special Muny bus and watch a show. The last time I went was when I was dating my husband and thought an ultimate date would be to dress up to go to the Muny! I probably insisted he wear a suit and I know I wore a long dress I had made myself, back in the day when my friends and I sewed a lot of our own clothes. I remember it being so stifling hot and the fans only ran before and after the show and during intermission! Not a good night to be “dressed up” at the Muny! They even have free seats way in the back, if you want to get there early enough to snag one and have a good pair of binoculars!

My husband, his sister and her husband decided we would all go, especially after talking to my cousin who said it was one of the best shows she had seen. We bought tickets, stopped for dinner on the way, and arrived at the Muny with a couple of umbrellas and jackets “just in case” (although everyone knows that the best way to prevent rain is to take an umbrella!). It was cloudy and the temperature almost cool with the fans blowing and, the show started. After a little while, a few stray raindrops started falling and then more, and I pulled my jacket up over my head. Finally they stopped the show, saying they needed to dry the stage so the dancers would not get injured. In a few minutes, the rain stopped, we walked back to our seats from the side under a roof and the show restarted. It wasn’t too long until the sprinkles started again, and again they stopped the show, announced that the Weather Service said the rain would be out of the area in 10 minutes, they dried the stage and we took our seats again. My sister-in-law kept grabbing paper towels to dry off our seats each time we returned. As it turned out, it was nearly time for intermission, so again the show stopped because they had to “reset the stage” for the second half but they cut intermission short.

Great!  Now we could finally watch the rest of the show! Just as they got to the big number where Dolly walks down the grand staircase during the “Hello, Dolly!” song, a few little raindrops began falling. Nobody moved, even as the rain continued to fall and the cast kept singing and dancing! I think they were determined to get through that big number no matter what and sang and danced their hearts out, even walking out on this narrow portion of the stage closer to the audience.  By then it was pouring, but the audience stayed to watch and cheered them on and applauded. This time they had to call the show, but I think everyone in attendance had enjoyed the show so much up to that point and appreciated the effort of all the performers (there were umbrellas up in the orchestra pit!) that no one was upset that we didn’t get to see the rest of the show. I don’t think I’d ever been to the Muny when it got rained out so this was a first for me! I read later that the local marching band in the show, the O’Fallon Township High School Marching Panthers, stayed and played for the people exiting out the front of the theater, but we were parked in back. I was glad I had gotten to see them in the show earlier, though. It also got rained out the next night, so hopefully they will get in the last show of the season tonight!

I’m sure I will remember the rainy night at the Muny seeing Hello, Dolly! for a long time! You can even go to THIS LINK to view the Muny website and scroll down to see the audience full of umbrellas. If you are in St. Louis in the summer time, you might like to put seeing a show at The Muny on your itinerary! It’s a St. Louis institution!

Be Patriotic! Fly the Flag on Flag Day 2014!

Flag Day 2014

Be patriotic! Fly a flag on Flag Day today!  I love to put out my flag, although it often blows and catches on the roof or gets all wrapped up in itself. But today it looks really nice along with the blooming crepe myrtle.

Flag Day is when the flag was first issued by the Continental Congress in 1777. This day also marks the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the USA, which Francis Scott Key was inspired to write upon seeing the flag flying over Ft. McHenry after a battle with the British.

It wasn’t long ago, but you can view my post HERE from D-Day when I made a flag card with the new Work of Art stamp set in the new Stampin’ Up! Catalog.

Work of Art Flag for Flag Day 2014

Happy Flag Day! Celebrate by flying your flag!
