Sweet Symmetry Cards

One of my favorite designer papers in the current Stampin’ Up! catalog turned out to be the Sweet Symmetry Designer Series Paper. It took me by surprise, actually! I didn’t order it originally, but I suppose I saw someone’s sample card or project that caught my eye, and then I had to have the paper! I found it to be just a fun, happy, pleasing paper to work with!

Before this paper retires in less than two weeks, I thought I would make a couple more cards. It is still available on the Last Chance List as I write this. You will find it on pages 112-113 in the Annual Catalog. There was also the In Symmetry Stamp Set but that appears to be sold out unless you would like the French version!

These two cards I made are easy to make and show off the Sweet Symmetry paper. They are both just a basic design with a greeting and a little bit of embellishment.

I first was inspired to make the Night of Navy card on the right. That dark pattern just caught my eye. I made the card base Night of Navy with a layer of Basic White under the designer paper just to help show it off. The greeting is stamped in Night of Navy ink on Basic White from the Tasteful Touches Stamp Set and die cut with one of the Tasteful Labels dies. I used another Tasteful Label Die for a layer underneath the greeting. The Tasteful Touches Stamp Set is retiring on May 2. The Tasteful Label Dies are also retiring and are also discounted! I used these dies a lot, especially the circles and hate to see this set go. For a little embellishment, before adhering the layers, I wrapped around a piece of the Whisper White 1/4″ Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon and adhered a separate bow with a Mini Glue Dot. For a final little embellishment, I used two Gilded Gems on each side of the greeting. The Gilded Gems are retiring and are discounted, too!

The “Thinking of You” card is made with the same Night of Navy paper but it’s the other side! For this card, I used Bumblebee cardstock for the card base and the bright, happy floral design for the card front. Before adhering the designer paper, I tied a piece of the Bumblebee 1/4″ Gingham Ribbon around the designer paper and tied on a bow. This pretty ribbon is retiring and is discounted. The greeting is stamped in Just Jade ink from the Blossoms in Bloom Stamp Set (retired). It’s only available in French now. The greeting is layered on dies from the Stitched So Sweetly Dies. These dies, sadly, are also retiring but have been some of my favorite ones to use. I couldn’t resist using a few Genial Gems, retiring soon but discounted.

Here is a photo of how I decorated the insides of the cards.

Sweet Symmetry Thank You Notes

Sweet Symmetry Thank You Notes

When you need or think you will need, a batch of cards for a certain occasion, just take the time to make a “multitude” of cards, exactly alike or not, as I did with these Sweet Symmetry Thank You Notes. And it was certainly fun making these cards with this cute designer paper! Keep the card design rather simple and maybe even leave off the greeting until you need a card, then add whatever sentiment you need.

For these cards, I chose to use the very cute and “happy” Sweet Symmetry Designer Series Paper. I didn’t think much of this paper when the Annual Catalog first came out, but then as I saw cards that I thought were cute, I found out they had used this Sweet Symmetry Paper! So then I had to have some!

The card bases are different colors to coordinate with the designer paper. Some are Night of Navy, some are Flirty Flamingo or Calypso Coral, plus Bumblebee. Some have an extra layer of cardstock under the designer paper. I used all different patterns of the Sweet Symmetry Paper.

The greeting is the same on all the cards. I used the “Thanks” in the Biggest Wish Stamp Set. However, you could use a birthday greeting, or congratulations, or almost any greeting, small or large. You could even have a bunch of rectangles or circles cut and left blank for when you want to add an appropriate greeting to your already made card when you need one in a hurry. My greeting is die-cut with one of the Stitched Rectangle Dies.

On almost all the cards I used the Bumblebee 1/4″ Gingham Ribbon. I love this ribbon and need to order another roll or two. It’s decorative without being overwhelming, small and narrow to use easily on almost any card or project. It’s a color that goes with a lot. On one of the cards, I used the Soft Succulent Open Weave Ribbon for something different. Those In Color Open Weave Ribbons are also gorgeous ribbons to have on hand, in case you don’t have any yet!

In summary, if you want to make an assortment of cards, choose a simple design and make it over and over again. Do each step over and over. Don’t make a whole card and then make another one. Do all the cutting, then the stamping, then the gluing, then the embellishing. Whatever your order of making your card is, but do the same step over and over again. This is good to keep in mind for making Christmas cards. It really is faster as you aren’t switching out tools and supplies and you develop muscle memory of doing the same thing over and over (even on just a few cards!). The easiest is to make each card like these I made exactly the same, but once you have the design, you can also change up a few elements just for fun. I used the same package of designer paper but changed the patterns. Used mostly the same ribbon but used it in different ways. I used the same diecut greeting. Whatever you like!

Sometimes it is fun to just make simple cards that go together rather quickly and make a batch so you have a sense of accomplishment when you get finished. That’s how these Sweet Symmetry Thank You Notes came together!

Sweet Symmetry Thanks Card

I passed up this new paper in the Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog at first, but decided that might have been a mistake so I ordered it recently on the Designer Series Paper Sale! Now I can use this cute paper to make cards like this Sweet Symmetry Thanks Card. The designs on the paper are really cute, I think, and fun to make cards and projects with.

The designer series paper is called Sweet Symmetry. It has traditional, symmetrical folk art images and florals in soft colors. One side has bolder floral designs and the other side has more generic designs. You can use them together or separately.

Although it looks black in the photo, the card base is Night of Navy, but you can see the dark blue background in the paper. I added a layer of Bumblebee cardstock underneath the designer paper just for fun. Since Bumblebee is one of the coordinating colors I thought it could add a little something to the card.

For an embellishment, I wrapped a piece of Bumblebee 1/4″ Gingham Ribbon around the designer paper and also adhered the separate bow. Sometimes it is easier to tie a bow separately and adhere it to the ribbon with Mini Glue Dots than to try to tie it to the base ribbon.

The greeting is from the Artistically Inked Stamp Set and stamped in Night of Navy ink. It is cut out with a Stitched Rectangle Die. I was going to cut out a layer of some kind to go underneath it without covering up too much of the paper, but in the end, I decided the greeting looked fine as is, especially with the Bumblebee Ribbon going underneath it. It is popped up with Stampin’ Dimensionals®.

This is such a basic, easy card design! It’s good for beginners as well as experienced stampers. Use just a card base, a layer of designer paper, and a greeting. That’s really all you need, but as you see, I added an extra cardstock layer and the ribbon for the embellishment.

I think the patterns on this Sweet Symmetry Paper just make you feel “happy” whether you are the cardmaker or the recipient! The Designer Series Paper Sale runs through August 2 so stock up or add to your collection of papers!
